I tried to max my available $$$ by purchasing this camcorder from Amazons Warehouse Deals. It was rated 'like new' and was about $318.00. It was still covered by Sony, and Amazon had a 30 day return policy. When the product arrived, the box was a bit gnarly....but I didn't plan on keeping it in a box. The camcorder was perfect, had all the cords, but was missing the ops manual and Sony CD-ROM. Amazon promptly sent me a RMA, valid for 29 days...no questions asked. (Thank you Amazon!) Before I went through the hassle of a return, I went to Sony's web site. I was able to download ALL of the original SOFTWARE with upgrades, and the ops manual free of charge.
As for the quality: I found more expensive cams with worse reviews. It has decent audio, and has external mic input if needed. It also has mini USB and a mini HDMI. The internal software is very functional, and allows you to create cool effects with music, right from the cam. Picture/video quality is decent. Its not the quality of a $1000 Canon, but its better than perfect for the average person. Most people are very impressed at the HD movies I have made, esp. when they see how small the camera is. The Sony optics are great. Its makes great images, even in very low light. It has a macro feature, image tracking, and and anti shake that all work great. The built in USB cord is useless, but $6 you can get a real cord that plugs into an external jack. It interfaces without error, on my DELL laptop and my 51" Sony Bravia LCD TV. This cam is good quality, and full of features.
Lastly, my hint to you. Before you blow big bucks on ONE HUGE SCHD mem card, think about this: Mem cards are like old time VHS tapes! The only people who record 8+ hrs of video work for NatGeo. A 16GB card will outlast your battery in full HD! Get yourself a few cards...a 16GB and a couple 8's. Let the kids use a small one, keep the big one for yourself, plus one as back-up. That way, everyone has their own pics/vids...nothing is ever lost. And, if you ever get into a bind, the cam has an additional 16GB built in! Your only problem will be finding enough stuff to film!!
